Rochester - is that The Flour City or The Flower City?
Actually, it is probably both. Rochester is located on the shore of Lake Ontario, and while it has many of the elements of a very large metropolitan area, it is never too far from its agricultural neighbors. Historically there used to be flourmills along the Genesee River. Today, the city bursts with flowers every spring – especially during the lilac festival. Yes, there are world-class museums, a planetarium, and several industry-leading companies, but many who live in the Greater Rochester area like to escape to their “cottage” for the weekend and many of those cottages are located in wine country, so many of this city’s residents are keenly aware of the strong agricultural base in New York state. But others are surprised to learn that New York State’s two leading industries are agriculture and tourism. Two of the high-value products that garner much attention for New York agriculture are our grape and wine production, and some of the main tourism attractions in the State are the wineries and vineyards. We would like to encourage all New Yorkers to become more familiar with these important pieces that make up part of the diverse quilt of New York, and to introduce visitors from around the world to the products available.

Wines from New York are served at some of the top restaurants in Rochester, and will enhance any special occasion you may be planning. But don't forget that a quiet dinner with family can sometimes be the most important occasion of all!

The New York wine industry is working with retailers and restaurateurs in the Greater Buffalo-Niagra area to make it easier for you to find New York wine on their shelves and wine lists. Please feel free to let your favorite wine shop or restaurant know that if there is a New York wine that they are not carrying, they may contact us for more information.

George Eastman and his company have had a major impact on Rochester and the world. Intriguing images and visions can be captured and shared and archived. Some images are pleasing to one person’s eye and less so to others. Wine can be just as diverse.

Many in Rochester know a great deal about the wines of the world – not just the local brands – and they are excited about the developments in the New York industry. Michael Warren Thomas is a local radio talk show host who works tirelessly at sharing his passion with his listeners. Through interviewing wine-knowledgeable guests and discussing these developments, Mr. Thomas is helping spread the word that the New York wine industry is more than and image – it is fully engaged in the marriage of art and science that is known as winemaking.
