The growth of our new premier club allows for exciting one offs and small batch production to meet demands. The expansion of the winery into something new and innovative brings a diverse product line that keeps the customers returning.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Oversee and participate in all aspects directly related to winemaking:
• Plan production quantities with general manager.
• Coordinate pick dates with vineyard manager and general manager.
• Coordinate harvest day operations in the winery.
• Coordinate delivery of fruit or juice from others.
• Perform chemical analysis on wines and conduct lab work. Wet lab is located on-site.
• Conduct all stages of wine production including fermentations and filtrations.
• Create blends for and coordinate tastings trials.
• Coordinate bottling and labeling of wines.
• Keep a safe, clean, organized production area.
• Keep state and federal records for taxation as well as required in-house records.
• Remain up-to-date on all compliance issues related to winemaking.
• Order and maintain inventory of supplies related to winemaking.
• Obtain TTB COLA label approvals.
• Maintain all winery equipment and systems.
• Work to become on-site specialist for these systems.
• Other duties include, but are not limited to:
• Provide expertise on:
• Purchasing new equipment when needed.
• New winemaking practices.
• Coordinate entries to wine competitions.
• Act as brand representative.
• Treat visitors in the production area with respect.
• Work with events team to prepare the production area when needed for sales activity.
• Assist with Music and summer events as needed.

Qualifications:
• Experience with French hybrid, Vinifera, and fruit wines.
• Strong work ethic, willing to work long hours during harvest and bottling. (Vacation time not available during these peak periods.)
• 3-5 years’ experience.
• Enology degree preferred.
• Experience with Database management, MS Office Suite: Strong Excel skills preferred.
• Able to lift 50lbs overhead and stand for long periods.
• Able to work with a small team in a supportive and positive atmosphere.

Forge Cellars specializes in hand-crafted bone dry Riesling and cool climate Pinot Noir on Seneca Lake, located in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York. Since our first vintage in 2011, our wines have garnered top scores in Wine Spectator, consistently ranking at the top of the Riesling category.  In 2017, our Dry Riesling Classique was listed at #31 on Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines” of the year.

Forge Cellars is the American sister estate of Château de Saint Cosme, a benchmark producer in Gigondas, France.  Louis Barruol is the 14th generation winemaker at a 500-year-old estate, and among one the highest and most respected winemakers in all of France.  His reputation for producing outstanding wines of quality and place are mirrored in the wines of Forge Cellars.  Louis oversees all of the winemaking at Forge Cellars, while Finger Lakes partner Rick Rainey manages the vineyards.

If you are interested in geology and want to experience first-hand what it is like to grow grapes in a remarkable, geologically diverse region, we have the perfect position for you.  Our work spans an 8-mile stretch along the southeastern shore of Seneca Lake.  We work with more than a 16 vineyard sites of varying proximity to the lake, and a range of elevations, soils, vine age, and history.

We are a very small, international team, and each of us shares all of the responsibilities that come with working in the cellar during harvest.  A strong work ethic and flexible schedule are definite requirements for harvest work at Forge.  We work incredibly hard while also having a good time.  Our harvest workers gain experience in every facet of production, from hand-harvesting our estate vineyard, hand-sorting, working with spontaneous fermentations and a variety of fermentation and aging vessels, and much more.

Harvest staff will be provided meals during the workday, and housing if needed.  This position begins mid-September until early November, approximately six weeks with the possibility of staying on longer if needed/desired.

Harvest duties include, but are not limited to:

  • hand-harvesting
  • hand-sorting
  • loading/unloading the press
  • punchdowns
  • keeping a very precise record of daily activities
  • cleaning

Requirements:

  • willingness to work variable hours (sometimes we begin midday and work until late in the evening, or begin at early hours)
  • willingness to work shifts 8+ hours and/or weeks exceeding 40+ hours
  • ability to lift at least 50lbs
  • passion and curiosity of wine industry
  • base knowledge of wine
  • tasting experience

Preferred, but not required:

  • previous harvest or winery experience
  • ability to operate a forklift

Buttonwood Grove Winery, an exciting, fast paced, growing winery on the East side of Cayuga Lake, is looking for a Vineyard Assistant.  Duties will include: 

  • Assisting the Vineyard Manager in all aspects of grape growing, including vine pruning, tying, post and wire maintenance, and other duties as needed
  • Working with the vineyard and winemaking team to harvest and process grapes
  • Routine building and grounds maintenance, including basic repairs, landscaping duties (weed trimming, mowing, mulching, etc), driveway maintenance, and other repairs and upkeep as directed 
  • Cutting firewood
  • Operating farm related equipment, mowers, tractors, forklift, etc.
  • Assisting to keep equipment and vehicles operational
  • Other tasks as directed by supervising team members

Qualified candidates should possess the following attributes:

  • Strong work ethic
  • Basic knowledge of tools and equipment
  • Basic knowledge of household-type repairs
  • Ability to do manual labor for extended periods of time, including heavy lifting
