If you know New York produces world class wine, you’re in great company.

Now, I am sure it doesn’t take a week of traveling through Paris and London to figure that out, but it certainly does help drive the point home. If you’ve seen some of our Facebook and Instagram posts this week you already know that I had the privilege of accompanying a team representing New York wines at the Fine Riesling Trade Fair at Le Pavillon Kléber in Paris on October 16th. The team consisted of Bob Madill, Katy Koken, winemaker at Bloomer Creek Vineyard, Paul Brady, New York Wines Brand Ambassador and me. The producers we represented at the show (and all events in Paris) were Anthony Road, Chateau Lafayette Reneau, Glenora, Bloomer Creek Vineyard, Keuka Lake Vineyards, Brotherhood, America's Oldest Winery, Fox Run, Nathan K, Hosmer, Red Newt Cellars and Thirsty Owl Wine Company.

There we stood side by side with the winemakers from the Pfalz, Rheingau, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, and Nahe. We exchanged wine and conversation with the owners and representatives of H. Dönnhoff, Hugel, Weingut Stigler, Karl Schaefer, Haart and many other producers of exceptional Riesling. The New York Wine & Grape Foundation represented the only Riesling from the United States and, as is always the case at tradeshows, attracted significant attention from other winemakers, students, importers and restaurants alike.

After the tradeshow, team member Bob Madill arranged for a New York Wines “pop up” tasting at Caves St. Vincent in Paris, where it is rumored three New York wines are now going to purchased for the retail shop.

During the trip we had the pleasure of meeting with Kate Snipes, the Agricultural attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Paris. As luck would have it, the timing was perfect. Kate invited New York to be the featured wine region at an upcoming reception being held to kick off the SIAL Paris International Food Show at the Ambassador’s Palace. We were happily able to oblige by providing them with the remaining wine from our events to serve their 400-500 guests from around the world.

From there, the team parted ways. Katy Koken remained in Paris to host a successful (and delicious) winemaker dinner at Dame Jane, where she connected with a small importer interested in bringing their wines to that market.

Paul Brady and I traveled Thursday to London to participate in a New York Wine & Cheese Pairing event for consumers hosted by Long Island native, Dan Belmont at Bedales, where Londoners raved about the wines from Dr. Konstantin Frank, Fox Run, the Tierce project, Channing Daughters, Red Hook Winery and Forge Cellars.

There we also met with our partners at Westbury Communications to discuss strategy for increasing and diversifying New York’s presence in the UK market. If your winery is in the Export Program and you have indicated the UK as a market of interest, we will be in contact with you in the next few weeks about exciting new plans through June 2019.

We also had time to stop at Hedonism wine shop to learn more about the London market. Established in August 2012 and located in the heart of London’s Mayfair, Hedonism is a fine wine & spirits boutique which has already become the most talked about wine project of recent times. There, we were happy to find an assortment of New York Wines from Paumanok, Red Newt Cellars, Wolffer Estate and Palmer Vineyard.

What we learned in both Paris and London is that those who know wine, even internationally (see: Jancis Robinson shares some love for the Finger Lakes and Red Newt Cellars) already know that we are producing at a world class level here in New York. They are eager to explore new producers who excel at the craft of winemaking. They are ready to purchase wine that might cost a bit more, because it delivers a quality experience and represents a truly 'New York' story. And we learned that people everywhere love New York.

We are excited to be back home, bolstered by the that knowledge, as well as the connections and sales we made from our trip abroad. We are inspired to take on our task to ensure that knowledge, understanding and recognition of our world class wines increase internationally and here at home.
