Happy February! Just like the weather, thankfully, things are heating up at the New York Wine & Grape Foundation this month. In the spirit of advancing the New York wine and grape industry, and the objectives developed in our strategic plan, we continue to forge boldly ahead with a robust schedule of events and programs design to raise the profile of New York Wines in 2019.
We begin this month with our Annual Unity Awards Luncheon at the B.E.V. NY Conference on Wednesday, February 27th in Rochester, NY. We enjoy the opportunity to recognize the hard work demonstrated by an impressive array of dedicated individuals who are committed to our industry. Thank you to everyone that sent in your nominations. We know your time is valuable, and to take a moment to recognize another is truly admirable.
In March we continue to help evolve and expand the market for New York Wines. Our Export Program participants have upcoming trade-shows planned to Prowein in Dusseldorf, Germany from March 17-19th, as well as Chengdu, China from March 17-20th. In May we head to Bordeaux for VinExpo. The work done by this program is placing New York State wines on the global map (in over 10 different countries) and helps wineries with an established international business strategy, as well as those exploring opportunities to develop one. For those of you interested in learning more about the program, click here. You can also listen to our recent webinars on exporting to mainland China and Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Canada.
March is jammed packed with opportunities for New York Wines to make an impact in critical markets all over the world, including right here at home in New York City. NY Drinks NY, now in its 8th year, celebrates the exciting world of New York wines in the New York City restaurant and retail markets. NY Drinks NY culminates in a Grand Tasting event in New York City in March welcoming trade and media attendees on March 26th at the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center. Over 200 wines will be poured from wineries around the state and sampled by hundreds of trade, media, and consumers!
We encourage you to celebrate in February with “No Corkage New York”month. Visit our retail partners: Bottlerocket Wine & Spirits and Vino Fine Wine & Spirits, to pick up your favorite bottles of New York wine and then head to The Jazz StandardCraft, and Small Batch, for a delicious meal. For the month of February, there’s absolutely no corkage fee on New York wines only.
Our annual New York Wine Classic will be held again in Watkins Glen, August 5th -7th. Referred to as the “Oscars” of the New York wine industry, this event showcases the delicious wines being produced across the state in a multitude of styles. Over 20 expert judges with prestigious credentials assess in a blind tasting and determine “Governor’s Cup,” which is the wine selected as the best of all categories of entries.
We continue to keep busy throughout the year funding important grape research initiatives. Our research budget is typically between $350,000-$500,000 and is dedicated to supporting dozens of individual projects, mostly conducted by Cornell University’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. Stay tuned this year as we announce the results of these projects and their implications for grape growing in New York State.
Because of your feedback, the Foundation is dedicated to increasing our educational offerings including webinars and in-person meetings and trainings. We’re looking forward to announcing discounted TIPS Training opportunities coming soon for winery members. Also, stay tuned for an announcement of a “Members Only” Legal and Fiscal Help Desk dedicated to answering your questions. Members will get more information on the Help Desk this month.
Speaking of membership, if you have not renewed with us yet – now is the time! Click here to log in and renew. If you would like to take part in the many programs and benefits we offer, you can join the Foundation any time as a winery, grower, business associate, or consumer member. Learn more about the benefits for each category and join online.
We want to thank all our members: wineries, growers, business associates, and consumers, for their continuous support in our efforts. Together, united, we forge ahead!
Cheers,
