Biography of Peter Weis, Co-owner, Weis Vineyards

Born in Zell Mosel, Germany, Winemaker Hans Peter Weis grew up in the vineyards and cellar of his family winery. It is there that he gained his passion for wine. Continually learning and working with his family to learn the techniques and tradition of the Mosel. Once he was of age, he furthered his education by receiving his degree in Winemaking, Business & Agriculture. 
After receiving his degree, he set out for the U.S. to pursue his passion. His first vintage in the U.S. was in Sonoma, CA working for Schug Carneros Winery. After completing this vintage he headed to the Finger Lakes region of New York to begin working for a prominent local winery. He quickly became a vital part of their wine making team. After twelve years with that winery the time came to venture out on his own. 
In the spring of 2016 he and his wife, Ashlee decided they would begin this adventure together and open up Weis Vineyards. They released their first vintage in May 2017 with a specific goal in mind: to utilize the diversity of the soil in the Finger Lakes to produce high quality Riesling, just as his family did back home in Germany. 
His love for the Finger Lakes region is due in large part to the superb terroir it provides. With the vast array of diversity in the soil he is able to utilize the strong minerality and slate characteristics to produce high quality Riesling, just as they do in the Mosel. 
A quick quote from Peter on his choice for Riesling: “Our Riesling grapes are grown in locations where slate content is high and similar to my Grandfather’s vineyards back home.”
