Greetings from the Great White North! I am writing from Toronto where I am attending the U.S. Consulate’s annual “Canada Concepts” conference hosted by their USDA Foreign Agriculture Service team. Canada Concepts is an economic and export focused conference for all US agricultural stakeholders with marketing programs in Canada. I am joined by Robert Ketchin, NYWGF Canadian Marketing Representative. We are also scheduled to meet with the executive leadership of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (the world’s largest wine buyer). Robert is leading a campaign in partnership with California, Oregon, and Washington to increase placements of USA wines through various LCBO sales channels. The opportunity for New York wines to increase their presence in Ontario looks promising as several top LCBO buyers have participated in our tastings this year.
 
I’m continuing to travel to California this week where I will be attending the U.S. Sustainable Winegrowing Summit West. The conference is a gathering of regional winery and vineyard associations, engaged grower and vintner leaders, and others committed to the sustainability of their local vineyards, wineries, and regions. I will be joined by Rich Olsen-Harbich and Whitney Beaman from our state’s own wine sustainability regional standard, the Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing. Our participation is made possible through a grant provided by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, and we are excited to return with some ideas and best practices to implement in New York.
 
So much happens in a typical week at NYWGF that the previous week’s activities can feel a month ago especially with travel. Last week marked a significant transition for the NYWGF Board of Directors as we held our quarterly board meeting and annual board elections in Chautauqua County. We celebrated John Martini, owner of Anthony Road Wine Company, as he concluded 15 years of service to the NYWGF Board. I consider John one of my mentors in the wine business as he has helped me grow professionally since I started with the Governor’s office in 2012. We will miss John’s keen insights on research, public policy, and wine politics, but more importantly, we valued his humor and thoughtfulness. Thank you, John, you leave NYWGF in a stronger place!
 
John will be succeeded by Oskar Bynke, co-owner of Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, who the NYWGF board voted to fill John’s vacated “At-Large” board seat. We are excited to welcome Oskar to the board and the perspective that he offers as a winery, vineyard, and nursery owner. In addition, Gerry Barnhardt, Mike Colizzi, Rob Smith, and Julie Suarez were re-elected to serve new three-year board terms. Our 2019-2020 executive committee will be Kim Wagner (Chair), Rob Smith (Vice Chair), Leah George (Treasurer), and Julie Suarez (Secretary). Our next board meeting is scheduled for July 24th, 1-5pm in Geneva.
