Field Notes...

Cheers to a beautiful harvest wrapping up for many of you!
I know that many in our wine industry are currently enduring the busiest weeks of the year, working to create their masterpiece 2019 vintage. At the Foundation, we are busy moving our mission forward and gearing up for our annual Membership Campaign.
As you may know, our mission   is  to  promote the world-class image of New York grapes and wines  from our diverse regions to responsibly  benefit farmers, producers and consumers  through  innovative marketing, research, communication, and advocacy . We endeavor to ensure that New York State is recognized as the  world's premier region  for cool and cold climate viticulture.
The wine industry is full of some of the most passionate and hard-working people I have ever met.  Still, there are so many integral parts working ‘behind the scenes’ in our industry and it takes the concerted effort of all of us to raise the profile of New York wines worldwide.
In our ever changing and evolving industry, the New York Wine & Grape Foundation strives to offer valuable benefits to all of our winery, grower, consumer and business members. We all do our part to elevate New York wines.
Growers need resources and knowledge (provided through our funding of  Research )  to produce high quality grapes that our producers can then turn into high quality wines. Producers need access to high tech and accurate resources to craft high quality wines ( Wine Lab Program ) then tools that help sell those wines, not just in their tasting room, but also online, in retail outlets nationally, or even internationally. This is where access to our  NY Drinks NY Program  Competitions Program , and  Export Program  can be vital resources.  We also partnered with Campbell Ewald and produced the New York  Wine Tourism Marketing Toolkit   which was created to provide practical marketing advice on how to increase visitation to tasting rooms and elevate visitors’ experience, thus making New York State a world premier wine tourism destination.
Education is provided to members through online and in-person events. Hot topics range from  ADA Website Compliance  and  Sustainable Winegrowing , to  Inventory, Accounting, HR practices  TIPS  trainings, wine tourism and more.
We need our retail partners (restaurants, liquor stores, and wine shops) to continually carry and sell New York wines so that ultimately our consumers (and hopefully all of you reading this), can enjoy New York wines in every corner of this diverse state.
We need consumers drinking local, sustainable, and most importantly drinking (demanding!) New York State wines.  We have recently launched a  Virtual Wine Tasting Series  for our Consumer Members. These live tastings, enjoyed from the comfort of your own home, are full of fun facts on New York wines and winemaking. We’ve also been showcasing award winning New York wines from our New York Wine Classic at exclusive dinners with partner restaurants across the state (they’re all selling out!) and our consumer members save at every event.
Consumer Members should SAVE THE DATE for our NY Drinks NY Grand Tasting on March 31st, 2020 at the iconic Rainbow Room in NYC. Consumer members save $20 off ticket price.
We are seeing “the fruits of our labor.”  Our Member Wineries are consistently receiving accolades and 90+ scores in  Wine Enthusiast  and  Wine Advocate . National magazines are publishing articles on wineries and restaurants carrying New York wines. Praise for regions on a National level continues to shine in such news as Finger Lakes being named  America’s Best Wine Region  in the Nation by USA Today poll for the second year in a row! Sam Filler, Paul Brady, and Todd Cavallo ( Wild Arc ) all received  Wine Enthusiast’s Top 40 Under 40  this year!  It’s exciting and enlightening to see our progress!
While there are many more stellar highlights and accolades, there is always more work to do. No matter which role you serve in our great industry, I encourage you to consider joining our Foundation so we may continue to complete our mission and make sure New York State is  the  world's premier region  for cool and cold climate viticulture.   Any questions, or for information and help  on joining our Foundation , please  email me  or call (315) 924-3703.
